Welcome from the Director

Welcome to Chabad's Jewish Preschool! Serving the educational needs of infants and children 18 months to 5 years, we look forward to opening new worlds for your child in fun and stimulating ways.

At Gani Preschool of the Arts, we are committed to creating a warm, friendly, and happy environment for your child while assisting in developing a strong positive awareness of his or her Jewish identity. Our curriculum integrates art, movement, pre-writing and reading skills, and early math skills into hands-on learning centers.

Nothing takes the place of direct contact between you, our school staff, and me. Please feel free to call with any questions or concerns whenever you feel it necessary.

- Nechama Farkash, Program Director & Site Supervisor

Mission & Philosophy

Our Mission

  • To educate your child in a creative, supportive, and warm Jewish environment, so that your child will not only learn about life as a Jew but learn to love it too.
  • To nourish and stimulate your child's learning priorities, developing cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills, so that your child will be a well-rounded and self-confident individual.

Our Philosophy

Gani Preschool of the Arts is a place where young children receive a warm and enriching preschool experience providing them with the foundation to grow socially, emotionally, and intellectually. Our goal is to create an environment that integrates the history and traditions of Judaism with a broad spectrum of secular topics. Children are encouraged to create, explore, and discover in the safety of our nurturing environment.

Non-Discrimination & Inclusion

Chabad Jewish preschool values and supports the rights of all children, regardless of ethnicity, religion, national origin, and diverse abilities.

Health & Sick-Day Policy

The health of your child is important to you as well as to our staff. Please keep your child home if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • A fever, or has had one during the previous 24-hour period
  • Is within the first 24-hour period of taking an antibiotic
  • Has a colored nasal discharge
  • Has a constant cough
  • Has symptoms of a possible communicable disease (red eye, diarrhea, flu)
  • Is fussy, cranky, or tired and generally not behaving normally

Please notify the school at once if your child has a communicable disease.

If your child becomes sick at school: we will set up a comfortable isolated area where your child can rest until you arrive. Children must be picked up within 30-60 minutes. If you cannot be reached, the emergency contact on your registration form will be called.

Medications

The law prohibits us from administering medicine, creams, or lotions (even non-prescription) unless it is specifically labeled with your child's name, doctor's name, and parent's name. Parents must also sign an authorization form stating administration and dosage.

Head Lice

If lice or nits are found, the school must be notified. A child may return following treatment and a lice check by the Preschool Director. State law requires verification that an initial treatment has occurred and that a second treatment will take place 10 days later.

Pick-Up & Drop-Off

The parent or guardian who brings and takes the child must sign the child in and out through the Brightwheel app. This is a safety measure we strictly adhere to.

Drop-Off Times

  • Before care: from 8:00am at the Shul House
  • Drop-off: 8:30am (no later)
  • Shorashim: no drop-off during circle time (9:30-10:00)
  • Garinim: drop-off cut-off is 10:30am
After 10:00am your child will be marked absent and cannot be brought to school. Accommodations can be made with prior communication with Nechama for occasional doctor's appointments.

Pick-Up Times

  • Half day: 12:20-12:30 (Garinim) / 1:30 (Shorashim)
  • Full day: 4:20-4:30 (3:20-3:30 during winter Fridays)

Late Fees

There is a fee of $5 for every 5-minute delay beyond the pick-up window. The computer system automatically generates this information at the end of the month.

Releasing of a Child

Children are released only to their parents or to people stated in writing on the child's registration form. All pick-up contacts should be added to your child's Brightwheel profile.

Tuition & Payment

The annual tuition fee is divided into 10 installments and is paid through your Brightwheel account on the first of each month from September through May. Your June installment is the prepaid deposit that secures your spot.

  • For any check not honored by the bank, there will be a $35.00 fee.
  • Tuition is an annual fee. No credits or make-up days are given for illness, holidays, or family vacations.
  • Accounts that become delinquent may result in termination from the program.

Change of Schedule

The office requires a 30-day notice for any change of schedule (adding or reducing days). Without 30-day notice, charges still incur for that period. When reducing days, a $40 administrative fee applies. When adding days mid-year, tuition is prorated based on 180 school days.

School is out of session for: Labor Day, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Passover/Spring Break, Shavuot, and Memorial Day.

Withdrawal & Expulsion

Withdrawal

If you decide to withdraw your child, please provide 30 days' written notice. You are responsible for payment of that month. Only formal written notice will be accepted. Failure to pay may result in penalty fees of $10.00 per overdue day and reporting to a collection agency.

Behavior Support

We are committed to supporting every child in a warm, nurturing, and inclusive environment. When a child's behavior consistently interferes with their own learning or the safety and well-being of others, we will:

  • Share observations and accommodations with the family to collaborate on a plan of support
  • Recommend outside support such as evaluations or developmental, behavioral, or therapeutic services as needed
  • Expect parents to follow through with recommendations in an agreed-upon timeframe

Expulsion

If, after implementing these efforts, it becomes clear that a child's needs exceed what our program can reasonably provide, we may recommend a different educational setting better equipped to support your child's growth and success.

Examples of unacceptable behaviors include hitting, biting, punching, inappropriate language, and injuries toward teachers, staff, parents, or other students. Gani also reserves the right to suspend a child immediately if a parent exhibits abusive behavior, crosses professional boundaries, or causes harm to the program.

Discipline Policy

Our program promotes a positive approach to managing behavior. The following techniques are used daily:

  1. Prevention & Positive Reinforcement - Daily routine, sense of security, and constant praise for appropriate behavior.
  2. Setting Limits - Simple rules are established and consistently followed. A poster with five simple class rules is always displayed.
  3. Problem-Solving - We encourage the child to verbalize and use logical reasoning as a means of solving problems.
  4. Remove Child From Situation - As a last alternative, the child is removed until calm enough to return cooperatively. Physical restraint may only be used to protect a child from hurting themselves or others.

Corporal punishment - including spanking, hitting, swatting, shaking, or physical restraint of any kind - is never allowed, nor is the withholding of food.

Our goal is to help each child learn to make good choices, use their words, develop problem-solving skills, and learn the basic human values of respect (kavod), trust, responsibility, honesty (Emet), and caring for others.

Communication

Open communication between parents and teachers is essential. Communication avenues include:

  • "Peek of the Week" Newsletter - Sent each Friday with information on classroom activities and a message from the Director with important announcements.
  • Brightwheel App - All official communication happens here. Check the calendar, messages, and daily feed regularly. Weekly lesson plans are also posted.
  • Direct conversations - For more than a short chat, please request a suitable time so the teacher can give you undivided attention.
  • Gani PTO - Parents are our partners in education. If you have a talent, skill, or occupation that would interest preschoolers, please let us know.

Conferences & Grievances

Parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year in the latter part of November and in May to discuss the developmental progress of your child. We use CDC age milestones and ASQ for screening and tracking development. Translation is available in Spanish, Hebrew, and Russian.

Feel free to arrange a meeting whenever an individual concern arises. To voice your concern is perfectly okay; we ask only that it be done respectfully.

If you have a concern, please contact in this order:

  1. Shorashim: Morah Sheina
  2. Garinim: Morah Sabrina
  3. Prachim: Morah Beth
  4. Nechama Farkash - Program Director & Site Manager
  5. Rabbi Farkash - Executive Director, Chabad of the Central Cascades

Nut Awareness & Kosher Policy

NUT AWARENESS: If your child had a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast, please make sure hands and face are thoroughly washed. Lunch snacks (and granola bars) should be checked to ensure they are completely peanut free.

Kosher & Dietary Policy

We rely on you to help us adhere to kosher dietary laws:

  • Please send only dairy or pareve snacks
  • All packaged foods and drinks should have a kosher symbol
  • Please do not send candy or high-calorie treats
  • Snacks should follow USDA Nutrition Standards

If your child is allergic to any foods or has special dietary requirements, please indicate it on the registration form. You will be required to fill out additional forms.

Birthday Parties Outside School

When all families are invited, please refrain from serving pepperoni and shellfish. A gluten-free option is appreciated if any guest has sensitivities. Kosher Pizza can be ordered from Island Crust at 206-232-7878.

Potty Training

Children who enter the Preschool (Shorashim) class must be completely potty trained. For children in the Toddler (Garinim) class, when developmentally ready, children should be sent in pull-ups rather than diapers.

Three categories of readiness:

  • Physical: Ability to hold on and let go. Children go for longer periods with a dry diaper and can handle their own clothing (pulling down pants).
  • Intellectual: Children tell or indicate they are aware of what is happening with their bodies.
  • Emotional: Children show willingness to use a potty or toilet instead of diapers.

When your child shows readiness, please:

  • Bring your child in loose, easy-to-remove clothing (no jeans, onesies, overalls, or buttoned pants)
  • Take your child to the restroom at drop-off — the first break should be with you
  • Pack a few changes of underwear and clothing (pants, socks, extra shoes, tops)

Accidents will happen. Stay calm and avoid negative words. Use positive phrases like "You forgot this time. Next time you'll get to the bathroom sooner."

Emergency Preparedness

Severe Weather

In cases of severe weather (snow, power outages), preschool will close when the public schools or county offices close. Staff will be kept informed and parents notified. Parents must be prepared to pick up their child within 1 hour of school closing.

Emergency Backpack

Please bring in a small backpack labeled with your child's name containing:

  • Pack of sanitary/baby wipes (20 wipes)
  • Spare blanket or change of warm clothes
  • 3-day supply of diapers and wipes (if not potty trained)
  • Index card with emergency contact info (including one out-of-state contact)
  • Emergency/comfort kit for your child
  • 72-hour supply of any medication or medical supplies
  • 1.5 gallons of water plus 3 days of emergency food (easy to serve, no cooling/heating needed, long shelf life)

Suggested emergency food: granola/energy bars, applesauce pouches, tuna pouches, raisins and dried fruit, canned beans, rice cakes, matzah.

Child Abuse & Neglect

All staff are required by law to report suspected incidents of child abuse and neglect. The Central Abuse Hotline is 1-800-96-ABUSE (1-800-962-2873). If you suspect abuse by a staff member, please notify the director immediately.

Respect & School Culture

Please respect the religious nature of our school:

  • Although our calendar respects legal holidays, we are a Jewish preschool. Please help remind your children that Halloween and other non-Jewish holidays are not celebrated here.
  • Please review and respect our kosher policy. Questions can be directed to the teacher or director.

Toys From Home

Toys and items of value should remain at home. We cannot assume responsibility for materials brought from home. Toys from home are hard to share, create classroom distractions, and can be a choking hazard.

Clothing

Please send your child in clothing appropriate for floor activities and messy art. Hard-to-close snaps, belts, and buckled overalls should be avoided. We strongly advise closed shoes (sneakers) and socks rather than flip-flops or sandals. Please label all hats, sweaters, and clothing.

Security

The safety of our students is our top priority. Gani Preschool of the Arts has hired Sarka to provide ongoing security personnel for our students and staff.
